Scholastic are a leading publisher and distributor of children’s and educational books, publishing titles such as The Hunger Games, His Dark Materials, Tom Gates and Dog Man. We are looking for an organised and motivated individual to join our Web team as a Junior Web Developer.

Working with the Scholastic UK Web team you will follow an Agile process to develop new features and fix bugs on our portfolio of customer-facing websites. You will collaborate with the team and business stakeholders to identify and implement User Stories using Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level candidate to gain experience in many top industry standard practices including test driven development, pair programming, code reviews and Agile. The successful candidate will receive mentoring and coaching along with dedicated time to spend learning in order to help them develop their skill set. This means that an aptitude for understanding technical problems and an enthusiasm for learning are more important than experience of the specific technologies.

We are a small team with a large brief. This means that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies, from using Terraform to manage infrastructure in AWS to client-side performance optimisation based on Core Web Vitals and everything in between.

The ideal candidate will have commercial, educational or hobby experience of at least some of the following:

  • Server-side development, not necessarily Ruby on Rails.
  • Client-side development using JavaScript.
  • Using and managing databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
  • Using the command line for development.
  • Git version control.
  • Fundamental internet technologies such as HTML, HTTP and DNS.

They will have the ability to work accurately and to organise and prioritise their own workloads as well being able to adapt to changing deadlines and requirements.

If you would like to apply, please send your CV along with a covering letter quoting the job reference number by email. Please state your current salary if applicable.
